OMG! John Oliver just gave away nearly $15 million!
The popular comedian and star of HBO’s LAST WEEK TONIGHT, dedicated half of his show to America’s ongoing problem with consumer debt.
“American households collectively own over 12 trillion in debt,” he explained before launching into what he called the largest one-time give away in television history.
As part of the stunt, the British-born Oliver set up a debt-buying company in Mississippi for a mere $50.
“We called it Central Asset Recovery Professionals, or CARP, after the bottom-feeding fish,” he explained.
Then, for just under than $60,000, he managed to purchase $14,922,261.76 of medical debt from more than 9,000 people.
Ordinarily companies do this type of thing for profit: the buy the cheap debt and then strong-arm individuals into repaying it.
Oliver took a different approach and forgave every penny.
“You’re about to watch me give away $15 million,” he told the studio audience. “F**k you Oprah!”
LAST WEEK TONIGHT airs Sundays on HBO.
