George Newbern Talks Season 3 of ‘Granite Flats’

“[This show] was such a breath of fresh air, working in a safer bubble rather than network television"

Yes, that is SCANDAL star George Newbern appearing on the third season of BYUtv’s GRANITE FLATS.

“There is a totally different tone to this show,” the actor tells me.  “Although there is an area of overlap in terms of mystery.”

GRANITE FLATS — which begins streaming on Netflix today — centers around mysterious events taking place in a small Colorado town at the height of the cold war.

Newbern, 50, joins the cast a successful New York attorney Scottie Andrews, who returns home to join his family.

“[This show] was such a breath of fresh air, working in a safer bubble rather than network television,” he says.

“A lot of times as an actor you can be on a set and you can feel the network breathing down your neck.  That is not super conducive to having much fun and the creative process is short circuited.  But in this case it was a joy.”

GRANITE FLATS also reunites Newbern with BACK TO THE FUTURE star Christopher Lloyd.

Last week, Newbern revealed that he auditioned 30 years ago for the iconic role of Marty McFly — which, of course, ended up going to Michael J. Fox.

“I flew out for a screen test my junior year in college. I was with Chris Lloyd and Crispin Glover, and all the rest of the cast,” he said.

“[Lloyd] doesn’t remember, I don’t think.”

GRANITE FLATS is currently streaming on Netflix.
