We’re off to see THE WIZ!
The mid 1970s Broadway musical — which reimagined THE WIZARD OF OZ with an all black cast — was selected as NBC‘s newest live theatrical production.
In January, network programming boss Bob Greenblatt hinted that he was also considering THE MUSIC MAN.
THE WIZ — which was also made into a 1978 movie starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson — will be produced by Craig Zaden and Neil Meron in conjunction with Cirque du Soleil and is expected to make its way to Broadway in 2016.
“We love this yearly tradition and we’re more excited than ever to not only bring another Broadway musical to America’s living rooms, but also see it land on Broadway as well,” Greenblatt said today.
“Cirque’s incredible imagination will help bring the fantasy world of Oz vividly to life and give this great show a modern spin on the age-old story we all love.”
No cast has yet been announced.
This will be NBC’s third live musical production in as many years.
A 2013 production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC (starring Carrie Underwood) was a critical bomb but brought in huge numbers.
Last winter’s stab at PETER PAN LIVE (starring Allison Williams) hit the right notes with critics, but drew far fewer eyeballs.
We’ll have to wait a while to see how this one goes.
THE WIZ will premiere December 3 on NBC.
