‘How I Met Your Mother’: Barney Vows To Tell Robin The Truth

Robin’s cold feet were warmed by Barney’s vow and three deep breaths

How I Met Your Mother

Did Barney and Robin tie the knot after the longest wedding weekend of all-time?

This week’s episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER answered two of the show’s last lingering questions: would Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) say “I Do,” and where and how would Marshall initiate his final slap. As it turns out, the answers would coincide in one legendary ceremony.

We’ve known since its eighth season premiere that Robin would be struck with cold feet on her wedding day. What we didn’t know was what would inspire her nerves to wake 32 minutes before her nuptials.

THE VOW TO TRUMP ALL VOWS

Ever since their engagement, Barney’s lies had only grown more apparent, and naturally, that caused Robin great grief. How could she marry a man okay with lying to her, when Ted had proven himself an honester man? It didn’t take long before Robin unearthed that Ted had tracked down her locket, not Barney, and that her husband-to-be had no qualms lying about it when Ted offered him that chance.

It was Ted’s monologue on love that closed the door on any potential reunion for he and “Aunt Robin,” but it was the still unnamed mother (Cristin Milioti) that stopped the her from becoming a runaway bride. On her third deep breath, Barney appeared. Tossing his overly-exaggerated vows aside, he promised Robin only one vow ––– that from this point forward, he’d always tell her the truth because it’s the only vow that counts.

My Two Cents: Though Barney and Robin got hitched, it doesn’t necessarily indicate a happy ending. A lot could change should the writers decide to throw the audience a curveball in next week’s series finale.

OPERATION: FINAL SLAP

Robin was escorted down the aisle by her father (Ray Wise) as “Sandcastles in the Sand” was played from afar. And it was Marshall’s last slap that calmed Barney down when he realized the perfect tie was still in Manhattan.

My Two Cents: The second-to-last slap (“Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra”) overcompensated as a means of establishing a half-hour’s worth of filler. For that, I’m glad the last slap proved to be the most significant slap of all.

MARSHMALLOW N LILYPAD 4EVER

After a tumultuous season-long strain in their marriage, it was only fitting that the second-to-last episode of ‘HIMYM’ take a moment to showcase why Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) remain TV’s best (and most compatible) couple. Though it was assumed their happy ending came when Lily’s pregnancy was revealed in “Daisy,” it was tonight’s reaffirmed vows that brought their series-lasting relationship full circle.

My Two Cents: Though it was funny to hear Marshall promise only 80% of his vows, the writers missed the opportunity of having him promise 83% of his vows, a callback to Barney’s insistence on using the number 83 in each made-up statistic.

The series finale of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER airs Monday night at 8:00 PM on CBS.
