Few subjects are more controversial than spanking a child.
But ABC’s LAST MAN STANDING isn’t afraid to tackle hot-button topics head on.
In tonight’s episode — which E.P. Tim Doyle calls the “best of the season” — there’s conflict in the Baxter home when Mike’s father Bud (Robert Forster) takes an old-fashioned approach to disciplining his five year-old grandson, Boyd.
As showrunner on “Last Man Standing,” I’m supposed to pretend that I’m proud of all the episodes we do, sort of like I’m not supposed to have a favorite child. But, of course, I do — my daughter Lily and the FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6 LMS episode, “Spanking.”
“Spanking” gets into the thorny issue of corporal punishment and how it weighs upon a new generation of parents who may or may not have been spanked themselves. We handle it in our characteristic funny and surprising way. I’ll go out on a limb and say it’s our best episode of the season and funnier by far than any single episode of “Low Winter Sun.”
Special guest star Robert Forster really steps up to comedy in the role of Tim Allen’s dad. Another interesting fact about this show is the script was written by Miriam Trogdon and Gracie Charters, the only mother-daughter professional TV comedy writing team in history (that I’ve ever heard of).
Here’s a clip:
I happen to think this show is one of the best kept secrets on TV. If you haven’t checked it out yet, be sure to.
LAST MAN STANDING airs Fridays at 8:00 PM ET/PT on ABC.
