Rion Paige is back in the game.
The bubbly Florida teen appeared to be in danger of elimination after her Wednesday night performance of the Marvin Gaye – Tammy Terrell classic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
What a difference a day makes!
After a voting glitch forced producers to scrap the result show and allow each of the top 13 acts to sing again on Thursday, 13 year-old Rion created the night’s most memorable moment, performing a countrified, acoustic version of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”
The performance was even more gripping when you consider the personal challenges this incredible girl has faced.
“I have arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC),” she explained during her audition. “It’s basically a whole bunch of words to describe something really simple. My hands are curved differently because of my joints, so I have to learn to do things differently. And I’m almost permanently blind in my right eye.”
But none of that is about to hold her back.
“I truly believe that being born with a difference did help me be more mature in my life,” she told me in an exclusive interview Wednesday night. “Having to overcome things on a day-to-day basis, which can be frustrating, is hard, but…I believe me being born with a difference helped me prepare for that.”
Here’s more of what she had to say:
Life has thrown you a few curveballs. I imagine a few negative comments from a TV show judge isn’t that big a deal…
Definitely not. I take every comment to heart and say “I’ve got to improve on that next week. I’ve got to make sure I put my own [in] even more. And keep improving.
Are there limitations to what you can do on the show — besides holding a microphone?
No, there are not. As you saw tonight, in my Motown number with everybody else [I had a headset mic]. So I can move just like everybody else can. I still have a voice. I believe I am not the girl with the hands. I am the girl with the voice.
You aren’t going to tell me that it has always been easy. It had to be hard to come to terms with everything…
I get the positive attitude from God. Before I go onstage, I pray. I say “You have me.” Because there is nothing else I can do. This is out of my control… I just have to put my trust in him that this is my will and this is his will of me doing this. And this is what he wanted me to do from the very beginning.
