James Caan can channel his real life experience as a Little League coach on the new ABC comedy BACK IN THE GAME.

Caan — who stars as overbearing ex-athlete Terry “The Cannon” Gannon — spent several years on the diamond with his then teenage son, Scott.

“I was not quite The Cannon, but I was enthusiastic,” he revealed during a Q&A presentation in Beverly Hills.  “I got thrown out three times. I chased two of the umpires over a fence with a baseball bat!”

“They told me I said, ‘Well, why was he out?’ He said, ‘I don’t like your attitude.’ ‘Tell me why he was out.’ He says, ‘Hey, I don’t like your attitude.’ That was it.”

Luckily his passion for the sport was worth it.

“We won the city one year,” Caan says.

Per ABC, the show “centers on Terry Gannon (Maggie Lawson), a recently divorced single mother who temporarily moves in with her estranged father, a beer-swilling former baseball player. She reluctantly starts coaching her son’s underdog Little League team and is drawn back into the world of sports she vowed to leave behind.”

BACK IN THE GAME premieres September 25 at 8:30 PM on ABC.
